Southwest Florida is located along the gulf coast of Florida, just south of the Tampa Bay area and north of the Everglades. It consists of 5 counties which includes Lee County, the most populous of the counties. The county makes up the entirety of Cape Coral, Fort Myers and other smaller cities and towns such as North Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, Pine Island, Captiva Island, and Sanibel. In 2006 the U.S. Census estimated that Cape Coral's population had grown to 151,389, making it the largest city in Southwest Florida, while in the same census Fort Myers population was reported to be 60,531.
Fort Myers boasts a large international airport, Southwest Florida International Airport - (RSW). In 2007 the total number of passengers that passed through RSW was reported as 8,049,676, making it one of the top 50 busiest airports in the United States. In 2006 RSW was ranked among the top 10 airports in the 2006 Global Airport Satisfaction Study conducted by J.D. Power & Associates,
Fort Myers is the former winter home of Thomas Edison, and hosts the current spring training facilities for both the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins.
